Measurement of magnetic moment

Residual magnetic moment of JAS-2 was measured at ISAS (Institute of Space
and Astronautical Science) in February 1996.
As the attitude control of JAS-2 uses magnetic torque, it is necessary to
know magnetic moment of itself, which is out of the design.
In the Helmholtz coil, like a spherical cage, JAS-2 rotates and if there be
some magnetic moment, current will be induced in the coil. Thus residual
magnetic moment is measured and we verified that it was less than ten per
cent of magnetic moment to be produced by magnetic torquer. The residual
moment may not have any effect on the attitude control.
