Special Olympic Station 8NØWOG
February 7th through February 22nd, 1998, the XVIII Olympic Winter Games, Nagano '98 will be held in Nagano-prefecture ( 90 minutes by Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo ). Eighty three National Olympic teams are expected to participate with a total of approximately 3,000 players !!
To commemorate this big event of the world, JARL is going to set up a special amateur station "8NØWOG" which will be opened for any amateur licensees from any country in the world. If you are planning to come to Nagano, please don't forget to bring your amateur radio license. Details are:

Campaign for New Members
JARL is conducting a campaign for increasing the number of members (from November 15th to December 20th, 1997).
JARL members, inviting a new member during this month-long period will have a chance to win a prize (selected in a drawing). Prizes are: tickets to and from Nagano (worth 100,000 Yen) for 2 persons, hand held GPS receiver (useful for calculating grid locator) for 2 persons, wristwatch (with CW beep function) for 6 persons, amateur radio magazine subscription (for 1 year) for 20 persons, cap (callsign embroidered) for 20 persons and callsign sticker for 50 persons.
Additionally, JARL affiliated amateur radio clubs inviting a new member, will have a chance to win a portable generator (for 2 clubs) and Ham shops inviting more than 50 new members, will receive a plaque.

The Call Book of JARL Members
The new 1998 Call Book, containing an updated listing of all JARL member stations (totaling about 150,000 stations), will be published in January, 1998. This new edition includes latest information and data to be required by radio amateurs. The price of this book, made up of about 1,000 A4 size pages, will be 3,885 Yen (including tax, excluding postage, Japanese edition only).

For Future Communications
Working Group Meeting on "Future Communications" in JARL Technical Committee was held on October 29th, 1997, at the CQ Publishing Co., as a joint meeting with the Packet Radio Users Group (PRUG), a group of packet communication enthusiasts. At the meeting, the state of arts of "high speed digital data communications" was reported, and "application of micro wave for amateurs' worldwide communications network" was discussed. And many more studies were reported and opinions were exchanged lively.

Now it is possible for JARL members to pay JARL membership renewal fee at major convenience stores, 24 hour opened, such as 7-Eleven, LAWSON, Family Mart, Mini Stop, SUNKUS and others. (Approximately 23,000 stores in total) Two months before expiration, JARL members will receive a form which can be used at the convenience stores when paying.

New City "Koga"
On October 1st, 1997, a new city named "Koga-shi" was born. It lies near Fukuoka-shi in Fukuoka-prefecture, Kyusyu. Its JCC number is 4029 and will be counted as a point for JCC and AJA award.
